Review: 'RUSK, ZACH'
'Ensemble (EP)'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '2010'

Our Rating:
Life has dealt 24 year old Zach Rusk more than his fair share of curveballs.

His ailments include Tourrette syndrome, autism and scoliosis; the last of which has necessitated rods and screws being fused into his spine.

None of this has stopped him from being an active sportsman, or gaining a degree in Psychology from the University of Utah.

His piano playing is a key part of his coping mechanism and he says "I just like to record and see where it goes".

In the light of his experience, it would be nice to be able to give a more positive appraisal of the four instrumental tracks on this 15 minute EP.

Instead, whatever piano playing gifts he is blessed with are swamped by computerised generated drum beats, clunky bass and wishy-washy acoustic guitar.

The fact that the record got made is undoubtedly an achievement; it's just a pity he couldn't have kept to more minimalist arrangements to allow his skills as a pianist to be heard properly.
