Review: 'BARKER, SOPHIE'
'SAY GOODBYE'

-  Label: 'HoHUM'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: 'March 2011'

Our Rating:
Known most notably as the voice of Zero 7 and Groove Armada, after a lengthy hiatus SOPHIE BARKER returns with a distinctively French influence.

'Say Goodbye' is a brooding break-up song which oozes sensuality due to its lo-fi production. Some exceptionally tight drumming anchors the song and allows the instrumentation to breath with an ephemeral quality that immediately captivates. We get earthy Wurlitzer in the verses but it’s the cascading acoustic guitars in the chorus along with Barker’s announcement “I don’t want to fall in love again and again” that cut deep into the heart of the moment.

Just over two minutes in there’s the introduction of a spider web of splintering electric guitars and moaning feedback. It’s undeniably physical and a little bit weird. Before things get too grubby however there’s a nagging insistence that this song could sit quite comfortably on a Dido album. And that makes me feel more dirty than anything.
