Review: 'Just Handshakes (We're British)'
'New Adventures in Pop Single'

-  Label: 'Elefant'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: 'April 2011'

Our Rating:
Elefant continue their 'New Adventures in Pop' singles series with a four-tracker from C86 revivalists Just Handshakes (We're British). The Leeds act have certainly been getting themselves into all the right places lately, with support slots with The XX and Shout Out Louds, amongst others surely contributing to the sold-out status of their previous three singles.

This latest offering is essentially business as usual: chiming, jangly, bittersweet indie pop songs that all clock in around the three minute mark or less. As such, Just Handshakes deliver exactly what they always promise. Clara's vocals may prove something of a stumbling block for some but they're distinctive and perfectly suited to the floral dress and cardigan-wearing sound she creates. It would be all to easy to dismiss this as twee janglesome indie, but there's a purity in these succinct slices of sweetness that's hard to deny.
