Review: 'Dead Boy Robotics / Machine Room, The'
'Split Single'

-  Label: 'Tape Singles Club'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '23rd May 2011'-  Catalogue No: 'Tape Singles Club # 1'

Our Rating:
Tape Singles Club is ostensibly the new record label arm of Edinburgh’s Tape Studios. The premise is that they will release split singles by bands who’ve recorded at the studio and who, in their opinion, deserve to be heard and to have their music released properly on glorious 7” vinyl. It’s a model I have to admire.

It’s a pity, then, that their first release doesn’t really cut the mustard. Don’t get me wrong, the sound and production and performances are excellent. We’re not talking half-baked or amateurish here. However, on ‘Ever’, Dead Boy Robotics take a stab at big and atmospheric, with reverb and expansive synth sounds creating a large space in which to play their hybrid of electro, dance and new wave. Unfortunately, the mass of delay and epic stylings can’t cover the fact that it’s rather soulless and ultimately pretty weak. Still, it’s better than the wet, introverted indie-dance of ‘Girly’ by The Machine Room. Lacklustre shoegaze with a disco beat, it really isn’t much to get excited about.

Here’s hoping subsequent releases have a bit more oomph.
