Other reviewers have described Steel Island's music in terms ranging from raw and desperate to melodic and hopeful. To the list I would add unexpected and darkly uplifting.
'Lucifer the Lightbearer' rocks far harder than the chiming guitars might first suggest as it crashes into a shimmering treble-heavy wall of sound – and is not a death metal paean to all things Satanic as the title might suggest.
Double A side, the 'Ghost Edit' of 'AnimalslaminA' (I can't comment on the original version) owes a great deal to the Cure, the fragile, plaintive and lost-sounding vocals echoing, disembodied in a musical tide of reverb. But make no mistake, this is no mere stylistic appropriation: Steel Island have a style and sound all of their own, and songs to match.
