Review: 'STENDECK'
'Scintilla'

-  Label: 'Tympanik Audio'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '22nd March 2011'-  Catalogue No: 'TA052'

Our Rating:
Scintilla is yet another striking release from the consistently excellent Chicago-based Tympanik label.

Stendeck is Alessandro Zampieri from Switzerland and this is his 4th full length album overall and, two years on from Somnambula, this is his second for Tympanik.

With seventeen tracks and a one hour plus playing time the album revels in its epic proportions matched by Sensurround sonic effects that are as a big as a city.

Many tunes are dominated by staccato percussive beats to create an industrial mood which always threaten to overwhelm the listener. The menacing mood is balanced by dreamy synth washes to soften any harsh or aggressive edges.

Shifting between the two sonic strands creates a state of tension that particularly suits the chase themes conjured up in tracks such as Catch The Midnight Girl and Run Amok (Against Time Rebels).

Poetic and self consciously cinematic titles invite you to add your visuals to the tunes - three examples are Tight Around Her Throat She Slips Away ; Tired Figures Wave Goodbye In the Backdrop Of A Sinking Ship and Voiceless Wishes Flicker In The Shattered Mist.

The titles seem to narrow the choices but ultimately this is a soundtrack to anything you want it to be.
