Review: 'Hey Colossus'
'RRR'

-  Album: 'RRR' -  Label: 'Riot Season'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '27th June 2011'-  Catalogue No: 'REPOSECD029'

Our Rating:
Straddling atmospheric experimental desert soundscapes and pummelling riff-based stoner rock that lumbers like Melvins at their grinding best, 'RRR' sees Hey Colossus expanding their sound and offering an album that's extremely distinctive and anything but lightweight. They don't simply alternate between the two dominant styles, either: while 'Teased from the Nest' drifts like a zephyr in the Colorado Desert, and 'The Drang' crunches, bucks and grunts, laden with sludgy guitars with an extra layer of treble squall, the title track merges the two to cataclysmic effect.

The eight and a half minute 'Rotated for Success' is little short of megalithic, and yet somehow, they've got even more juice for the instrumental 'Almeria, Spain', which combines speaker-shredding guitar with sonorous, bowel-shaking bass, all shot in cinemascopic widescreen. 'Warmer the Belter' is an oasis of tranquillity in the sonic maelstrom, although the lyrical content ('Leave here... Leave him whole... Go alone....') suggests an underlying will to violence as well as the simultaneous arrival of both an end and a new beginning. Sure enough, 'I Am Bunga Bunga' builds a simmering tension before bringing the album to an explosive finale, making a fitting finish for an album that's pretty special.
