Review: 'Of the Vine'
'Of the Vine'

-  Album: 'Of the Vine' -  Label: 'Self-released'
-  Genre: 'Post-Rock' -  Release Date: '20th June 2011'

Our Rating:
With the endless torrent of releases that I find are put my way, it seems like a long time since I had anything overtly post-rock to wrap my lugs around, even if in truth it's only a couple of weeks.

Still, if Atlanta-based instrumental collective Of the Vine's five-track self-titled offering is wholly entrenched in the trappings of the genre, with Explosions in the Sky being the most obvious reference point, then it's equally a shining example of how to do post-rock well.

Quiet chiming guitars are broken through with tight, militaristic drumming and gently rippling passages build to magnificently realised climaxes that are simultaneously poised and dramatic.

The eight-minute 'Kinderspiel, Pt. 1' is a real standout, encapsulating everything that the band are about into one perfectly-crafted statement. It's by no means a fluke, though, and 'War' is a chunkier, heavier track that sees the band add (some) vocals as well as chugging powerchords to their textured sound.

It's their willingness to push the boundaries, and the volume, that sets Of the Vine apart from the rest of the post-rock pack. It's not that they don't do dainty, but they're not shy when it comes to kicking it up a gear either, giving this (mini)album a greater sense of range. Moving, exciting, dynamic and occasionally momentous, this is a genuinely accomplished release.
