Our Rating:
As the artist name suggests, this is an album of music for films that have yet to be made.

Music For No Movies is Italian Federico Fantuz (from Bologna) who specialises in Eno-esque ambient tunes built around gentle acoustic guitar melodies.

Violent Zen is his 11 track debut release.

His compositions are somewhat pompously described as "orphan tracks conceived as soundtracks in search of their cinematic motherhood".

Adjectives like ecstatic, evocative, unsettling and grotesque to used to describe the mood. This makes the tracks most suitable for existential thrillers, bittersweet love stories or atmospheric horror films.

I would certainly pay good money to see movies with titles like The Dog And The Downpour and Stupid American Elephant Drunk Joy Joke. The latter is a short throwaway tune and the only one that breaks the glacial tone of the album.

The tranquil minimalism of Fire And Sky and Wind Wash are more representative and the rich textural atmosphere of Avro Moon is the most evocative piece.

The title Violent Zen was probably chosen for fear of being tagged as New Age. It is a bit of a misnomer as there is nothing faintly violent or aggressive about any of the tracks.

If anything, the record evokes a sense of solitude, of being removed from the disturbances of daily life in the same way that you enter a cinematic world partly as an means of temporary escape.

The reflective quality the record would therefore make it an ideal mood setter for some Zen meditation in which the visual landscape is supplied by your imagination.
