Hailing from Denmark, RUMPISTOL (aka Jens B. Christiansen) calls his brand of electronica ‘broken soul’ and it does have a tail end of the night, woozy wonky feel to it. It shares similarities with the work of dubstep producers such as James Blake but puts much less emphasis on the vocal side of things, preferring instead to focus on one or two warped out lines such as, “we’re not gonna make it”. Despite the glitchiness, Rumpistol’s sound is clean and cold with plenty of space for the little bits and bytes to bounce around inside the track. It’s processed until it lives and breathes.
Where the vocals are more in evidence, on my favourite tracks ‘We’re Not Gonna Make It’ and ‘Through All This Madness’, the tracks have more of a complete feel. Does glitch by nature have to sound like a half finished track? The more I listen to this type of music the more I feel it is telling me something about the world I live in. Specifically about broken society, told from within as opposed to say the blurbs and bleats of our erstwhile leaders. Not so much broken soul music then as the music of a broken soul. Maybe we could all do worse than listen a little harder.
