Our Rating:
Catherine MacLellan is a Canadian singer and writer whose Dad Gene wrote the catchy and commercially successful "Snowbird" in 1969 (a 1970 hit for Anne Murray, subsequently recorded by Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby, Loretta Lynn and more).

That was 40 years ago of course, but this album (her fourth) is testimony to the enduring appeal of a simple arrangement and a big song done in handsome style. Catherine is touring the UK soon, and I have a feeling that anyone who goes to her gigs is going to come away with a deep smile and memories of a great night out. Probably clutching a signed copy of this album.

I can't honestly recommend that it should jump to the top of anyone else's list though. It is good, the songs are well-enough-written and they are sympathetically played by a good band. But the modesty and charm of it lies in not pushing any boundaries or outdoing any of those who went before. 2009 had her voted as Canada's Solo Artist of the Year at the Folk Music Awards, with her album "Water in the Ground". Oddly, it was even less of a folk album than this one. Rachel Unthank or Eliza Carthy she is not. But such are the vagaries of award events.

No, this album stands on its own two feet - take it or leave it. It's mainstream/alt country with an honest face and a nice line in sad songs. The best part of it is Catherine's comforting, easy voice. The consistent songs roll comfortably through the album and hold the mood of rueful romance that can feel so good when things get too much.
