Review: 'Larsen'
'Cool Cruel Mouth'

-  Album: 'Cool Cruel Mouth' -  Label: 'Tin Angel Records'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '4th July 2011'

Our Rating:
Larsen's CV is impressive: they've shared stages and collaborated with the likes of Neurosis, Einsturzende Neubauten, Michael Gira, Lustmord, Z'ev, Jarboe, Nurse With Wound, Xui Xui and Johann Johannsson: it's a veritable who's who of cult music of the noisy persuasion. 'Cool Cruel Mouth' represents album number 13 in a 5-year career, and manages to combine accessibility with experimentation.

There are occasional bursts of noise, but mostly, abrasive tones are kept in check on 'Cool Cruel Mouth', with a leaning toward sounds that swell and cascade making for an album that drifts and sways and pulls at the listener's senses without resorting to battering their eardrums too hard.

I admire the restraint displayed, and the soundscapes they forge are at times quite, quite stunning, but there were also numerous times when I found myself wanting something somehow more: not even more challenging or noisy, per se, just more distinctive.
