Review: 'ANKLEBITER'
'Queue'

-  Label: 'Tympanik Audio'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '24th May 2011'-  Catalogue No: 'TA054'

Our Rating:
If you are being picky, this is not an Anklebiter at all.

As a collection of remixes it should really be tagged as a Various Artists product but identified thus runs the risk of getting filed away with thousands of other VA titles in Cyberspace and destined never to see the light of day again.

To make it less of a misnomer, Anklebiter has actually contributed two new titles - By Design and OTT - so it is not entirely someone else's work.

Regarding these 'new' tracks, the first provides some high drama moments while OTT is, despite its title a modest tune that swells and glides without any hint of excess

The remaining nine tracks are renditions of tracks that appeared on Anklebiter's debut album for Tympanik from 2010 - I Will Wait. (His real debut was Standing Height on En:peg).

Anklebiter is the moniker for Tanner Voltz who is based in Portland, Oregon.

Voltz cut his teeth on other electronic acts as one third ML and as part of Thine Eyes before starting his solo adventures in 2008

Contributors are principally drawn from the roster of like-minded artists who hide behind their chosen pseudonyms at Tympanik or from the N5MD label in Oakland.

Access to Araska takes University to a darker place to open the album in epic style.

The two versions of I Will Wait's title track are conveniently places back to back to invite a compare and contrast exercise. Boy In Fiction's take is echoey and fizzes atmospherically while Dirk Geiger adopts for a softer flowing ambience.

A pattern of electronica albums is for there to be at least one track with vocals. These, more often than not, sound like a cross between some New Romantic tosh or designed to be played on the closing credits to a fantasy movie .

On Queue, there are two offending items, namely Irulan's Accessible and Lights Out Asia's Nothing Will Happen Today - try as I might, I can't feel much love for either.

Lulls aside, this album is by turns stuttering, glistening, enthralling and/or epic and a must have for lovers of IDM.

The full track sequence is as follows:
01. University (Access to Arasaka)
02. Frigid (Keef Baker)
03. Absolution is a Plushtoy (Jatun)
04. By Design
05. Frigid (SubtractiveLAD)
06. OTT
07 Accessible (Irulan)
08. I Will Wait (Boy is Fiction)
09. I Will Wait (Dirk Geiger)
10. One Three Two (Dryft)
11. Nothing Will Happen Tomorrow (Lights Out Asia)
