Review: 'RED:SHIFT'
'The Big Nowhere'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
”Moody, Melodic, Modernist rock”...on paper Red:Shift has a something going for it, but their EP ‘The Big Nowhere’ resembles some ragged linoleum in an abandoned kitchen – over worn, dull, and only the occasional bump of interest suffocating under the surface.

The three songs on offer here have splintery guitars and growling lyrics about getting chopped down in the prime of life, alienation, you know the drill solider...but nothing snatches the ear with a shaking fist, nothing shimmies its way out of the noise and demands attention. At present there are other bands doing the same kind of stuff, but better. Interpol for one. Red:Shift have cobbled together some minor chords and some slightly iffy vocals but not gone for the jugular. It sounds angry at times, at least there’s lots of murky vibrations’ hovering in the air...the ghostly bones of The Cure stripped of all vital signs and screwball charisma...but, ultimately, ‘The Big Nowhere’ doesn’t go anywhere.
