Our Rating:
The first time I heard My Bloody Valentine's 'Loveless', I had to keep checking that the record wasn't warped and the belt on my turntable hadn't stretched. No doubt I'd have been doing the same with this album had it been on vinyl, the yawning, bending sounds of 'Sleepless' replicating that woozy, disorientating experience absolutely. While many bands have styled themselves on MBV, few have done it quite as well as Piatcions.

Combining sixties pop and swirling psychedelia with blurry shoegaze guitars and fuzzed-out garage riffs and stomping glammy beats, buried in the muddy mix, ‘Senseless>Sense’ is a dizzying and heady blend of the tripped out and the freak-out. The resulting concoction is pretty potent.

There are points when the duelling guitars threaten to collapse into chaos, but the relentless rhythm section holds everything together while the maelstrom first teeters, then draws back from the edge of the abyss. And that's just the first song.

When they do slow it down, as on 'Sleepless', which sounds like a stoner tribute to the Jesus and Mary Chain, they still manage to bring things to a whipped-up frazzled guitar wig-out by the end. Similarly, Piatcions bring to baggy 90s style indie a real injection of energy, and while they may not have the earth-shattering impact of A Place to Bury Strangers', they certainly kick up a sufficiently towering wall of warped, shimmering guitar work to render otherwise moribund, lacklustre genre trappings exhilarating, making for an album that fuzzxes and buzzes to the max.
