This single doubles as a statement of intent and a taster for Lisa Hannigan's second album, Passenger, the follow-up to her Mercury-nominated platinum-selling debut, Sea Sew.
Hannigan made her name accompanying Damien Rice, with whom she sang and toured for seven years.
Lisa says of her debut: I look at it today, and there's a certain sense of wanting to appear happy and confident. I wanted it to seem as though nothing bothered me".
Knots certainly gives the impression of an artist who doesn't want to be forever portrayed as a carefree Miss Goody Two-Shoes. The sound is sharp and earthy, thanks in no small part to a brisk and highly assured production by Joe Henry.

As with Sea Sew, Hannigan didn't hang around in the studio. The whole album was recorded in little over a week.
Knots is built around a simple plucked guitar refrain, fleshed out boldly into what her promoters colourfully describe as "an electrifying blend of Southern stomp, screeching strings and lyrical tales of a debauched, whiskey-soaked night".
It bodes well for the album.
