Released simultaneously with Paul A. Rosales’ collaborative single with R. Stevie Moore, Ergo Phizmiz’ ‘Food and War’ is completely cuckoo - and I'm not just talking about the recurrent whistle sound that's all over the song, along with a cacophony of gibbers and wibbles, honks, parps and croaks. An abstract take on upbeat acoustic folk music, it's borderline deranged, but makes for quirky fun.
R. Stevie Moore's version on the flipside couldn't be more different. In fact, its barely recognisable, taking the form of a low-fi powerhouse punk number, with galloping drums and overdriven guitars that buzz and fizz all over. He's retained the cuckoo noises, though, which still tie his interpretation to the original.
Very much a record of two halves, the different renditions contrast and compliment one another perfectly.
