Review: 'Dark Captain'
'Dead Legs and Alibis'

-  Album: 'Dead Legs and Alibis' -  Label: 'LoAF Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '17th October 2011'-  Catalogue No: 'LOAF47'

Our Rating:
From the very first bars of opener '3 Years to Go,' Dark Captain’s second full-length album begins to build a delicate and richly-layered atmosphere that marries folk instrumentation and arrangements with swirling shoegaze ambience. The vocals are softly melodic, and quietly, yet quickly, seduce the listener into a tranquil place tinged with melancholic yearning. 'Dead Legs and Alibis' is an album that swoops and dives, drifts and glides, a smooth wash of mellow sound that flickers and glimmers like a candle... capturing its essence is impossible, and therein lies its beauty and its brilliance.

The carefully-engineered tension of the martial rhythm of 'Fade' contrasts with the washes of sound that burst from the clouds of '80000 Reasons', while lead single 'Submarine' is a definite standout. But 'Dead Legs' is an album that works best when treated as such. Cumulatively, the lilting, dreamy qualities of the songs build an aural experience that’s all-encompassing and beautifully realised.
