'Go Fun Yourself'

-  Album: 'Go Fun Yourself' -  Label: 'THROOP Records'
-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: '7th November 2011'

Our Rating:
I’ve been pretty down on the contemporary ‘punk’ releases I’ve heard recently, and in my defence, not without just cause. The dissipation of anger and rebellion, the formulaic sound and image, the overtly pop choruses are all anathema to what I see as core to the spirit of punk. The slick studio production, too, stands at complete odds with the DIY ethic . None of this is putting it to the man, is it?

The Super Happy Fun Club do at least turn the guitars up a bit, and have some chunky riffs in between the melodic, harmony-soaked choruses, but... no, I’m sorry, it’s all wrong. Even when they’re venting their frustrations, they’re being bouncy. And they’re called The Super Happy Fun Club, for Fun’s sake.

In the same way that the likes of Good Charlotte make like they’re somehow punk (and are surely old enough to know what punk is), The Super Happy Fun Club are punk for children. I’m not saying punk can’t or shouldn’t be fun, but it should at least have some kind of lurking menace rather than being as bright and bubbly as a can of Tango. The truth is, they’re about as punk as Busted, but somehow operate under the pretence that they’re somehow more credible. Don’t be duped.
