Review: 'Falling Spikes, The'
'Spacebarred'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '27th October 2011'

Our Rating:
I’ve seen Falling Spikes a few times live now, and while many bands fail to capture the spirit of their performances under studio conditions, this three-tracker from York’s premier purveyors of swirling psychedelia is an excellent representation of what they’re about and conveys the atmosphere of their shows perfectly.

From nowhere, ‘Burning Ships’ swells from a steady nod-along to a crashing cymbal-drenched crescendo. It’s a trick they repeat on ‘Slip Away’ which starts off as a sweetly sedated jangling drone that lulls the listener before bursting into a glorious technicolour explosion of sound. The Falling Spikes are a band that understand dynamics, and above all, the gratifying effects of a build-up and release of tension – a point more than ably demonstrated on ‘Emily’, a dreamy, slow-burning number that keeps on plugging away before breaking into a blistering kaleidoscopic wall of noise climax. Top notch.
