Review: 'Roman, Ana Lola'
'No Architect'

-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '15th November 2011'

Our Rating:
What do we know about Ana Lola Roman? Well, the press release tell us that she’s ‘a multi-faceted persona for sure’ and that ‘the New York via Berlin songstress is a woman of many talents; simultaneously a sound designer, a choreographer, a multi-instrumentalist and a highly skilled composer. Her influences are just as diverse; she cites an eclectic combination of flamenco, tango, 80s pop, Sheffield synthpop and industrial as being definitive to her sound.’

So why does ‘No Architect’ sound like the blandest of chart electro, with little more than a drum machine, synth piano and, frankly, not a lot else beneath the vocals? Perhaps it’s all about her. Solo artists with the right look, the right marketing, can get away with some right bilge with next to no substance simply because they look and sound the part, more or less. Perhaps this is the secret of Ama’s appeal. After all, we’re informed that ‘With her fashionista persona, electronic influences and icy post-VU Nico resemblances, Ana is carving out a unique niche for herself in the music world, based jointly out of NY and Berlin.’ Only that’s bollocks too, because she looks like your average office girl on a Friday night, and her singing could easily be confused for a sheep’s bleating.

I give up.
