Review: 'Our People Versus Yours'
'Lights'

-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal' -  Release Date: '21st November 2011'

Our Rating:
No pissing about here on this four-tracker: lead track ‘Lights’ crunches in with some dense guitars, overdriven and with some serious afterburn, there’s rolling percussion and a thumping bass, and then the vocals enter the mix with some serious throat... but what’s with that fretwanking lead guitar?

The frenzied fury of ‘Ariha’ is poky and tight but somehow it just seems to be lacking something. Perhaps it’s just that the vocals dominate the guitars too much. It’s a common fault with so much contemporary metal, but in fairness, the howling frustration of ‘I’ve Had Better Days’ turns this to powerful effect as the rage simply flows and bleeds into the closer ‘In Unity’.

It would be all too easy to pick fault and dismiss OPVY as exemplars of the modern metal style, but they’ve a lot more fire and a lot more balls to their sound than 90% of the melodic wimpy crap I’ve heard lately that I’ll let the widdling on the lead track pass: as a whole, it’s actually pretty decent.
