‘Epic’ is a word that’s been chronically overused in recent years, to the extent that it’s become as meaningless (and has often been as misapplied) as ‘anthemic’ and ‘iconic’. It’s a pity, because it means that when something that possesses truly epic qualities comes along, there’s the risk of it being lost in the blizzard of pseudo-epics, the faux-epics and the not-really-epic-at all.
The latest offering from Leeds / Sheffield based seven-piece Tomorrow We Sail combines post-rock sensibilities with an almost classical approach to orchestration to produce two pieces that are truly worthy of being described as ‘epic’. Stretching for seven minutes each, ‘The White Rose’ and ‘Leningrad’ are rich in texture and atmosphere, delicate and ethereal, and nothing short of magnificent.
