Review: 'JESS HALL BAND'
'PLAY SHY (EP)'

-  Label: 'Hi Tone'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '5th December 2011'-  Catalogue No: 'CD4'

Our Rating:
This EP is the debut release from Swindon based The Jess Hall Band who are all under 18 years old and from the sound of it are aiming for the middle of the road.

The opener Play Shy has barely there vocals that make me think of Feist or Siskin. It's a nice enough song but doesn't stand out.

Grace however is the highlight of this 3 song EP which, considering it was apparently written when Jess was very young is all to the good. It appears to be about wanting to find someone with some grace and again is in the vein of Feist, though it is certainly a song I want to hear more of.

Let it be known is an OK break up song. It suggests that once Jess and her band have matured a bit she will be quite a songwriting force to be reckoned with. This is a good first effort but not in the same league as the still astonishing debut relase by Ben Lee's Noise Addict and their Young and Jaded EP which for me is the benchmark for prodigious young talent to aim for.
