Review: 'Post War Glamour Girls'
'Spitting Pearls / Ode to Harry Dean'

-  Label: 'Sturdy Records'
-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: '10th October 2011'

Our Rating:
I may have come to this a little belatedly given that this Leeds act’s debut single came out in October and we’re now halfway through December, but it’s never too late to get excited about discovering a new band that totally blow you away – and that’s just what this inauspicious-looking little release does.

‘Spitting Pearls’ is a slow-burner that’s achingly delicate and crafted and moody… and then it just detonates in your face. Devastating, exhilarating, it howls – specifically, Tom Waits soundalike howls, while the maelstrom tears all around him.

Double A-Side ‘Ode to Harry Dean’ is positively schizophrenic, with the gentle passages sung in melodious and charming tones by female vocalist Alice before male voice James roars in and annihilates the tranquillity with stomping rage and flaming bile. The juxtaposition, in combination with the fire of the delivery absolutely make this record, and it’s essential listening.

On of the most exciting releases I’ve heard on months, 2012 could be their year. It bloody well ought to be.
