Review: 'Message to Bears'
'Folding Leaves'

-  Album: 'Folding Leaves' -  Label: 'Dead Pilot Records'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '18th January 2012'

Our Rating:
Message to Bears is one Jerome Alexander and he makes music to chill to. Not in the obvious chillout or ambient sense, though: ‘Folding Leaves’ is a tranquil folk-based album that draws on elements of post-rock and ambient and augments the sound delicate strings to make music that has the capacity to calm the mind and body.

‘Wake Me’ is evocative of green meadows, while the gently plucked acoustic guitar and smooth strings that provide the backdrop to the laid-back vocal delivery on ‘Mountains’ is at once captivating and calming. The title track shimmers, notes ripple like sunlight playing on the surface of a lake on a Spring day. Jerome’s understated use of his voice on ‘At a Glance’ is sensitive and beguiling and sits perfectly with the soft instrumentation, and encapsulates the pastoral nature of the album as a whole; charming – without being in any way naïve or so simple as to exhaust interest in a short time – and executed with a lightness of touch that appears truly effortless. A lovely record.
