Review: 'Polly and the Billets Doux'
'Hold Fast EP'

-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '8th May 2012'

Our Rating:
The Sunday Times describe them as ‘A harmony blend of country, folk, soul, rock and blues!’ and while this rather lengthy list of genres threatens to create an umbrella so broad as to be without meaning, Polly and the Billets Doux do incorporate a whole screed of elements into tightly-packaged little parcels of joy with a real sense of accomplishment.

There’s a definite country twang to the lead and title track here, but it’s got a good time folk feel to it too, and in terms of tempo and vibe, it does rock. ‘Factory Whistle’ combines classic 60s pop with skiffle and rock ‘n’ roll to forge a jauntily melodic tune with a vintage feel without seeming contrived, and to good effect. The second half of the EP is given to a softer, largely acoustic folk feel. The pure and simple ‘Hymn Song’ and almost shanty-esque ‘Fortune of War’ allows Polly Perry’s vocals to take the spotlight, and it’s a lovely thing.

These four tracks provide an excellent showcase for the breadth of the band’s style and the depth of their quality. Easy on the ear without ever being insipid, it’s not hard to hear why pundits and music fans alike have been drawn to Polly and her crew.
