Our Rating:
Big studio sound, play it loud, dance about stay detached and restless. Be young. This is a big record about nothing much at all, done with panache, professionalism and self-belief. In a world where everything needs a story, LETTIE has a story. It's a story that turns insider into outsider in an interesting way.

"You wanna be a star" (track 1 "Swirl") is a line we've heard before. We have friends and acquaintances who, or who know someone who, has just done a tour with DURAN DURAN or has recorded their last albums in Seattle or videoed experimental artists in Lisbon. "All under the radar – you wouldn't know them". But you might see them at the O2 next year. Or maybe not. Sadly, pop has eaten itself. Spontaneous combustion no longer creates firestorms. Just campfires and local fireworks. I think this is a good thing. The Industry and The Ambitious and Simon Cowell do not.

Do you like LETTIE'S recordings or not? Do you like them enough to want to buy a CD or look for a gig ticket? Her opportunity is there. She has the experience and the songs and the producer and the publicist to be noticed. Will the attention be enough to give her celebrity magnetism? Has LITTLE BOOTS broken into your ambit of desire? Will LETTIE?

I'm buggered if I know. Have a listen www.lettiemusic.com/music.html and see if she arouses the desire. There are good postcard scans to look to too. She has things to say, she cares, she sings and plays well, her voice is human and communicative. It has emotional range and confidence. The music spins along without anything more disturbing than a bit of C3PO warbling in "Digital". It's nice. It's varied, it has nice catchy bits. It could cheer you up and wrap you up in hopeful dreams. I know of one articulate Dr Who fan with good taste who I think might love it.
