Review: 'PIG EARTH'
'14' X 12''

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '5th February 2012'

Our Rating:
Pig Earth are a five-piece country-folk band from London and this six track mini-album takes its title from the dimensions of the lounge where it was recorded.

The songs were written by guitarist Neil Keveren and pianist and melodeon player Emma Steele.

Keveren sings on all tracks except for Here With You, a very soppy song the press release tells us is about being in the arms of someone you love just in case you couldn't guess.

The other musicians are Craig Stratton (violin, mandolin and banjo), Matt Heighway (double bass) and Dave Rowlands (percussion).

The line "Have I told you lately that I love you" from Paint The Town Red makes me think of Van Morrison's song from Avalon Sunset and I'd guess they have also been listening to the Enlightenment album since Lately sounds suspiciously like Van's Memories. Any other resemblance to Irishman is in their dreams.

These are some of the blandest songs I've heard in a good while with lyrics that are so banal they could be parodies. The best/worst example is "Marry me this Spring upon the village green, you and I and vicar, and what witness he might bring" from the closing track, Cherry Blossom but the opening lines Everything runs it a close second : "When I come home, if it's not dark, I will fix the roof, you can sand the front door down, get this house like new" .

They are nothing more than lame hymns to some imagined domestic bliss where DIY and love coexists.

The instructions to the listener on the album sleeve advise us to "Put the kettle on and pull up a chair".

I'll be needing something much stronger than a nice cup of tea before playing this one again.
