Review: 'Et Tu Bruce'
'Suburban Sunshine'

-  Album: 'Suburban Sunshine' -  Label: 'Worldwide Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: 'May 2012'-  Catalogue No: 'ETB001CD'

Our Rating:
Bright and breezy opener ‘Dress Me Up In Bruises’ is followed by the gentle acoustic 60s folk-pop strum of ‘Memories Remain’, and it’s very soon apparent that the singles released ahead of the album - ‘This City’ and ‘Stars Fall’ - aren’t going to be surrounded by filler. So while I might not have been overly impressed by ‘Stars Fall’ initially, it’s to deny the appeal of its Byrds-like jangle after a few listens.

The ten songs on ‘Suburban Sunshine’ are jaunty without being irritating or twee, the harmonies sweet without being cloying and invite comparisons to the likes of The Hollies and The Beach Boys. The songs are neatly crafted, and nothing’s overdone, and with an uncluttered production, there’s a freshness that radiates from ‘Suburban Sunshine’. Even the more melancholic numbers are delivered in such a way as to be uplifting. Et Tu Bruce’s greatest strength lies in their ability to make music that’s easy on the ear without being insipid, and ‘Suburban Sunshine’ is an assured and enjoyable debut – although I stand by my previous observation that the band’s name’s awful.
