Review: 'Johnny 5th Wheel and the Cowards'
'Nancy / In My Laboratory'

-  Label: 'Sotones Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '25th June 2012'

Our Rating:
With a new eponymous album just around the corner, the 8-piece Johnny 5th Wheel and the Cowards have provided a taster in the form of this double A-side single release.

‘Nancy’ brings shades of surreal psychedelia and bleak folk to the vaudeville swing that Johnny and his cohorts have successfully established as their trademark. It’s a schizophrenic psychodrama which delivers the hook ‘I woke a man obsessed by a dream / of a girl possessed’ before launching into an increasingly frenzied existential panic culminating in an antic-climax that’s utterly brilliant.

There’s a manic edge to ‘In My Laboratory’, which could easily be from a musical. Clearly, one of the characters would be a mad professor, and ideally, it’d be played by the theatrically-inclined Johnny 5th Wheel, and no doubt it would be crazy, improbable and fun. On the evidence of the band’s previous output to date, this description will also apply to the new album.
