'NO LOVE LOST'

Our Rating:
Yes, THE NIGHTINGALES' current line up have gone back to Germany and recorded another LP at Faust Studios with Hans Joachim Irmler in the producer's chair and that can only be a good thing.

They sound, well, like the Nightingales: all angular and abrasive and full on as they have always been since the early 80's when John Peel played them to death.

Ace Of Hearts kicks the album off and sounds like The Miracle 3 on speed on an off Kilter run to score some more with the lyrics as the album's title suggests being centred on love going wrong.

The Done Thing always makes me sit up and listen as it sways into my brain through reptition and Robert Lloyd's almost spoken vocals tell of a guy who is going out bingeing to get away from the dying love at home. You can be sure that if you Say It With Flowers you do it with less menace than Lloyd does. But would you really want to be the subject of The Dishwater Kid? I doubt it.

One of the stand out tunes is Sentimental Dunce: a tune whose subject I would hate to be. All the lyrics are spat out with bile surrounded by a great stop/start clattering racket of a tune. The one quiet number (World Of Nothing Really) has Robert singing about "derangement Of the heart." Need I say more?

The album closes with the practically monumental Dick The Do-Gooder. That sounds like the Vaselines fused with the Jesus And Mary Chain, a full-on repetitive noise monster of a song and a great way to go out with all amps blazing with intensity and squalls of noise over a very familiar repeating motif.

Yet another great Nightingales album then. Well worth buying if you like irascible old Brummies with a tale to tell.
