Review: 'TOTTERDELL, MAZ'
'Sweep'

-  Label: 'Series B'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '28th May 2012'

Our Rating:
In photos and videos 15 year old Maz Totterdell from Devon looks as moody and petulant as any normal teenager but her songs show she has a maturity to set her apart from her peers.

She also has a knack of writing the kind of tunes that stick in your head. This is especially true of the opening track Counting My Fingers.

Maz is certainly no rebel as you'd gather from the dedication on the album sleeve to her "Nanna and Grandad" thanking them for buying your first electric guitar.

However, most of the songs are acoustic with backing here and there by some tasteful cello, fiddle or piano.

She comes across like a less spiteful Lily Allen who sings mainly about the dreams and complications of love and romance.

Some of these are written from a perspective that suggests that fidelity and wedded bliss are the key measures of happiness. The Leaver's Song and Blushing Bride are tunes you'd expect someone twice her age to come up with.

Lighter songs like Smile On Sunshine and Little Puzzle focus on sunny days, diamonds and moonlight with the kind of summery pop and twee folk tailor made for daytime radio or family-friendly TV commercials.

It has a certain charm and she has definite talent but on the whole I distrust the cutesy catchiness of it all.

If you can embrace it with a less cynical ear then me you can smile, smile, smile along with her.
