Our Rating:
26 years on from their last release, The June Brides make something of an unplanned comeback. This double A-side – released on 7” vinyl – delivers precisely what fans no doubt expect, and on that score, while it might not pack any surprises, this brace of dainty and melodic jangly indie songs of a classic vintage doesn’t disappoint. Bright brass and sweeping strings augment breezy lyrics on ‘A January Moon’, making it a super sliver of silvery indie pop.

The fact the release is bolstered with a CD containing 8 more rare and unreleased June brides and Phil Wilson solo tracks in addition to the single tracks effectively makes this an album release, and as such, an absolute boon for those who’ve been waiting all these years.

Amidst the sweetly melodic nuggets lies an alternative version of ‘Cloud’ entitled ‘A Choral Cloud’, which is stripped back and intimate, and the demo version of ‘Moon’ is surprisingly good too, revealing the bare bones of the finished work. The shuffling disco of the Andy Fonda Beans remix of ‘I Own It’ contrasts with the acoustic renditions of ‘Just the Same’ and ‘Sunday to Saturday’, making for a rounded and most pleasurable collection.
