Review: 'MULHOLLAND, MARK/WARD, CRAIG'
'WAITING FOR THE STORM'

-  Label: 'Cannery(www.canneryrecords.com)'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '3rd September 2012'-  Catalogue No: 'CRR1216'

Our Rating:
A collaborative effort from two of Glasgow's more revered singer-songwriters, 'Waiting For The Storm' in terms of past reputations alone is a record with massive potential. Though essentially this is MARK MULHOLLAND'S creation, WARD will be the star attraction for many following his stint with Belgian rock legends dEUS.

Moody, maudlin and desolate, with two instrumentals, the the record does see the duo playing to their strengths to some extent. The introspective, technically accomplished guitar work has been remastered to near-perfection, with TWO DOLLAR BASH member MULHOLLAND taking credit for penning eight or so of the ten featured tracks. Hannes D'Hoine's double bass adds to the depth

Ambient as opposed to melodic, the album meanders without ever getting out of first gear, with individual 'songs' (they barely qualify as such) structured loosely, if at all. OK, it's prog-rock inspired folk; catrgorising it according to genre may explain the average vocals, but the understated overall feel makes it a somewhat forgettable release despite the undeniably skilful instrumentation.
