Review: 'Race Horses'
'My Year Abroad'

-  Label: 'Stolen Recordings / PIAS'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '27th August 2012'-  Catalogue No: 'SR 057'

Our Rating:
Despite being a university town, Aberystwyth’s hardly renowned for it’s buzzing music scene. Race Horses look set to put the place on the musical map, and the release of ‘My Year Abroad’, lifted from their new album ‘Furniture’ coincides with their touring Europe with Bat For Lashes.

‘My Year Abroad’ takes elements of Soft Cell and other acts of an 80s vintage and shapes them to forge a sonic framework not a million miles from that created by She Wants Revenge, and that’s certainly no bad thing. Meilyr Jones’ vocals, though, are as much Morrissey as Marc Almond, but it works, especially on the surging chorus in which he recalls the ‘sinful lights of Tokyo’. The result is a tasty slice of dark-edged pop of a rare quality.

It’s accompanied by ‘Cysur a Cyffro’, a chunk of wonky indie with a keen pop edge, kinda like Pavement meets The Smiths, with a Welsh accent. Believe it or not, it’s really rather good.
