Review: 'HOME GROWN'
'You're Not Alone'

-  Label: 'Drive Thru Records'
-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: 'August 4th 03'

Our Rating:
Are all punk pop songs written at 130 BPM? "You're Not Alone" and it's sonic twin, B-side "Break Me Down" taken from Home Grown's 'Kings Of Pop' album, are apparently increasingly "mature" deliveries from the Californians.

And though their undistinguished pop punk sound hasn't noticably developed, maybe a touch more thought has gone into the lyrics this time around. There is a keen appreciation of the teen mind-set (or the dark tunnel of adolescence depending on your point of view) but don't expect subplot, counter pointing, symbolism or any words over 2 syllables long.

Track 3, the video for "You're Not Alone", unsurprisingly features the band playing live surrounded by teenagers down a burger bar and cocks a snook at tribal dressing and attitude. Which begs the question: What are a group of fully grown men doing surrounding themselves with teenagers? Admittedly they may just have nailed a target audience with the biggest disposable income of any generation ever (in which case congratulations are in order).

By way of explanation however, the video declares in it's closing frames "Home Grown has been a band for 8 years and all of them still live with their parents". Income still a problem then.Come on boys, growing up is hard to do but maturity has it's benefits. There's irony for one thing.

Which brings me to the video's final statement: "Don't follow a trend, be an individual".A fine but hollow sentiment considering how mind-bogglingly generic Home Grown's music is. Oh, the irony.
