How do I put this? Politely, I suppose, it would be fair to say that while the musicianship and production are hard to fault, the songs simply don’t translate. The band’s name, for starters: apparently, Muimy Troll is ‘The mummies’ troll’, which is a pun on Moomin Troll, the lead character from The Moomins. Who said the Russians had no sense of humour, eh? Not me, for sure.
‘Vladivostok’ is to all intents and purposes a ‘rock’ album. But that’s ‘rock’ in the Eurovision sense. It has a buoyant swagger that some might call theatrical but could equally be described as ‘campy’, and ‘sultry’ all too easily slides toward ‘laughable’ where both the lyrics (‘drink up your aphrodisiac / cruise the zodiac / violet Cadillac’ is about as good as it gets) and their delivery are concerned.
