Review: 'FIRESTATIONS'
'Meanwhile Gardens EP'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '10th September 2012'

Our Rating:
Firestations are a trio from North-East London who plan to release four EPs this year (2012). This is only the second with three quarters of the year already gone so they need to get their skates on if they are to meet this target.

On record at least, they don't sound so driven or goal orientated. Michael Cranny's voice has an engaging yet slightly careworn quality similar to that of Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour.

This, combined with the warm, gentle melodies, makes for a dreamy mood heavily tinged with melancholy. Laura Copsey on flugelhorn and flute adds a touch of class to the understated arrangements.

With lyrics like "I dedicate my transgressions to you" (This Sort Of Shiver), the EP is not pitched at the mainstream and contains four literate pop songs about desolate relationships.

You sense that there's a light, summery record itching to get out but when Cranny sings "it's cold and lonely without you" on Sink In, you get the message that this is neither the time nor place for such levity.

For the moment we have to accept the mellow glow which is not such a bad state to be in.
