Review: 'MISS MY'
'Reve'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '14th September 2012'

Our Rating:
Although Rêve is a work of instrumental electronica, classical piano is at the heart of this eight-track album which draws from a range of influences including Aphex Twin, Ennio Morricone and Kraftwerk.

It is the work of French-Canadian Miss Boucher, a Montreal-based artist who also plays keyboards for the post rock band Music For Money. The 'My' is short for Myriam.

The Krautrock connection is most evident in the driving rhythmic pulse of the opening track (L'Automate) where the constant clicks and whirrs suggest gear changes and pit stops.

The recurring pattern of most of My's tunes is to use classical piano intros to give a dramatic or purely melodic foundation. She then proceeds to systematically sabotage these by adding layers of glitchy and/or percussive beats.

The contrasting elements are particularly evident in the title track where a simple piano refrain morphs into more disjointed, edgy IDM beats to create the musical equivalent of dark clouds threatening to spoil a perfect summer day.

There's plenty of variety to avoid this becoming too formulaic - from thumping drums of Cité d'or to the cascading piano trills of Fall, the attention is focused on creating a sense of tension.

Une Danse has a lighter feel with a lively minimalist energy and the album closes with the calming ambience of Fleur.

Overall, a nicely varied and intelligently sequenced album that is more like a soundtrack to a tight psychological thriller than a lame nature documentary.
