Aaaaaah, how much fun this music is. To play, I mean, not to listen to. Monokey are part of the emo/metal breed of boys, expressing themselves in delicately constructed climactic introductions, before turning up the distortion and getting REALLY PISSED OFF. They demonstrate a grasp of catchy riffs, and they do have good ideas for developing those into songs, but the formula can be over-used: quiet bit, heavy bit, shouty bit, break… and so on. Sadly their guitarist(s) also have terrible taste in distortion pedals, leaving him sounding as though he’s playing under water – eventually I had to come up for air.
