Review: 'Hearse Pileup'
'Pretty Shiny Things'

-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: '4th February 2013'

Our Rating:
The name sounds like the product of a random band-name generator that’s been loaded up with every generic punk and alternative act for the last decade, but we should probably let it go.

A howl of high-pitched feedback is blasted away in a frenzy of fast-paced lo-fi garage punk with a bass sound so fat and fuzzy it almost blows the speakers. The vocals, strained, hurried-sounding and rough around the edges sit low in the mix, the sound tinny, trebly. When singer Matthew squawks ‘we’re generation Y’, you believe it.

‘Last Time’ sees Matt adopt Iggy’s crooning style as his reference point as he drawls nihilistic lyrics to an almost melody against a bass guitar that has edges so serrated as to induce flesh wounds, while the drums clatter away agitatedly in the back.

Topping it all off, the title track hits at a frenetic pace with all guns and guitars blazing as the band rail against empty consumerism and mass-market capitalism. This kind of antagonistic rebellion against mainstream society is what true punk was always about, and Hearse Pileup’s raw, back-to-basics sound is totally on target in its honesty and lack of pretension. These guys are disaffected, disillusioned, pissed off, and are gonna pour everything they’ve got into music to make sure everyone know they’re pissed off and why.
