Soft beats and soft bass tones play a major part in keeping things mellow on this quiet, thoughtful release that was borne out of sessions recorded in NYC between 2008 and 2011.
The downbeat, trip-hoppy dub of ‘Your Home’ is the first to feature Coleman’s vocals, and ‘Grope’ grinds out a low-down dubby vibe too, albeit with a jittery tetchy edge to it. Coleman’s vocals are rich, but occasionally there’s a subtle yet definite barb that means they don’t simply merge into the analogue tones. ‘Meet the Sun Rising’ infuses funk into a chilled-out ska shuffle and sashays into the jazzy groove of ‘Song That knows Your Name’.
‘Thwis’ is as cool and laid-back as you like and is unquestionably a late night, lights-down-low club friendly sound. It’s just a bit too head-up-arse for my tastes.
