Our Rating:
The Stubborn Heart beats just keep coming.

Hot on the heels of their eponymous debut album, the London-based duo drop four more swirling, spacey tracks which are available as a 12 inch single or to download.

The title track features in three mutations which are not actually that different from each other except that the MASSEYMIX adds some funky bass grooves to stretch out the four minute tune by a further two minutes.

Better Than This is quite a weary love song about a relationship that is heading nowhere and destined to end in tears. This leads to the resigned conclusion: "I can do better than you, you can do better than me, hopefully".

Ironically, it is the other track - Do Tomorrow - which, to my ears at least, is the best thing here. This benefits from being less focused on the vocals and more on the cool electronic (Northern) soul ambience.

The more I listen to Stubborn Heart, the more I understand where they're coming from.

The trick is that these sluggish grooves have to be heard in the right setting. For instance. early morning in bright sunshine wouldn't work. A dark club at around midnight with muted blue lighting is more on the mark.

The likelihood of me experiencing their music in an appropriate atmosphere is remote so I'll just have to drape a blue scarf over my bedside lamp and hope for the best!
