Review: 'Hogweed And The Aderyn, The'
'The Hogweed And The Aderyn II (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Folk'

Our Rating:
I get a lot of emails. I mean an insane amount, more than I physically have time to read. Many of them are press releases and have downloads or links to streams or videos, and again, there just aren’t enough hours in the day. Amidst the endless stream of bog-standard fare, there’s the occasional subject line that stands out a mile. ‘Hello from a Turkish folk duo!’ was one such standout and it certainly piqued my interest, so I had them send me a CD, because, well, you never know.

What began as mere curiosity was rewarded with what I can only describe as revelation. These aren’t simple folk ditties, brief ballads in praise of the sun, but longer meditations that hark back to ancient times. The six tracks contained here are eerily haunting: clanks and chimes and an array of percussion provide a backdrop to an ethereal female vocal on ‘Ije Before Time’. In contrast, ‘Le Goût de L’infini’ is mellow and delicate with a hint of melancholy beneath the lace-like surface, and a dark swirl of psychedelia echoes through ‘The Minstrel Prince’, and the vocal delivery is reminiscent of Jarboe. Coupled with the mesmerising, repetitive rhythmic motifs beneath it, the Swans comparison continues. Fading out on the gentle, short and sweet ‘Daily Life in an Aviary,’is beautiful, mystical music. Breathtaking. Bring on the Turkish folk invasion!
