Review: 'MCCOMBS, CASS'
'ROBIN EGG BLUE'

-  Label: 'DOMINO'
-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
 New single no 10
‘Robin Egg Blue’ is the first single release from CASS McCOMBS forthcoming album ‘Humor Risk’ (his sixth) which is released via Domino in November. This has a distinct 1960s dreamy feel to it, although the drum and bass figure heavily in the mix. Cass’ vocals are shrouded in echo, and there is some laid back keyboard work which adds to the atmosphere.

The lyrics seem wilfully obtuse: - “Reaching up, she felt two eggs with her fingers/ Lightly picked them out.”

With a vocal hook line of “What’s done is done”, I wondered whether the lyrics had a slight biblical metaphor relating to the fall of man. But as it says on Cass’ publicity blurb “McCombs presents morally ambiguous situations for the listener, allowing them to interpret however they choose.”

Altogether I found this an interesting listen, and look forwards to the album release. If the album is half as good as the single, then it deserves success.
